BRITISH TEAMGYM CHAMPIONSHIPS MARCH 2001

The venue for the 2001 Championships was Newcastle and the team decided to try and save some money by making the journey and competition in one day.

This proved to be a poor decision as the weather on the morning of the competition was so bad that the team arrived at the sports centre and went straight to competition warm-up.

The Girls in particular found this very difficult, as they usually take much longer to warm-up. As a result the first piece of apparatus “Tumble” was a disaster with a number of falls. Usually the teams best piece, the stress of just getting to the competition in appalling weather and the lack of a proper warm-up, resulted in a well below par performance.

On floor however the team picked themselves up and performed their best floor routine ever. The Judges however were not impressed and the score did not give justice to the performance.

The trampet routine was excellent and the score reflected this.

At the end the team were once again placed second to Andover who had performed well.

SCOTTISH TEAMGYM CHAMPIONSHIPS FEBRUARY 2001

Scotland held their first ever Teamgym Championships at Lasswade in February.

The Scottish teams were joined by a number of teams from the North of England as the event was a qualifying event for the 2001 British championships.

The competition proved to be a great success and Falkirk Teamgym were crowned Scottish senior mixed Teamgym Champions after fine performances giving them the highest team scores of the day in all categories.

FALKIRK SPORTS COUNCIL SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARDS 2000

Falkirk Town Hall was once again the venue for the Annual Scroll and Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The event which was held in April 2001 was for competition or representations in 2000.

As in previous years their was some exceptional talent being honoured by Falkirk Council and Falkirk Sports Council.

Falkirk Teamgym were awarded the Team of the Year for their competition success during 2000. They were runners up in their first British Championships and then were selected to represent Great Britain in the Euroteam 2000 championships in October where they were placed 11th which was an outstanding achievement.

GYMFEST 2001

The team completed their catalogue of recent events when they took part in the 2001 Scottish Gymnastics Gymfest which was held for the first time in Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh.

A full Gymfest report can be viewed on the website www.scottishgymnastics.com

"Team-Gym" is the most exciting and fastest growing area in Gymnastics at the moment.
Team gymnastics is quite new to Scotland although it has been popular for many years in Europe and for the last 3 years in England. The main difference between Team Gymnastics and the other more well known Artistic gymnastics is that it has been designed for teams of gymnasts from 15 years and older rather than for individuals who tend to be younger girls and boys. This gives potential sponsors greater opportunities to promote their products due to the numbers of gymnasts in the team who perform at the same time.

The other main attributes of Team Gymnastics are :-

Teams can be from a minimum of 6 members to a maximum of 12.
Teams can be all women or all men or an equal combination of men and women.
Team gymnastics is a competitive sport between clubs, with the top clubs in Scotland competing in the British championships and the top clubs in the British championships competing in the Euroteam Championships.
All teams compete on Trampet, Tumbling and Floor all done as a team and to music
Team gymnastics is an excellent spectator sport, which is very spectacular and as a result gets large audiences especially on the Continent.
Teams are very popular entertainment at other spectator sports i.e. football, rugby etc.
Falkirk is the first club in Central Scotland to take up the new sport and have already recruited 16 men and women aged 14 to 29. All are experienced gymnasts who have adapted well to the new requirements of the sport.
